What the Long-Term Numbers Tell Us
Long-term returns can be more useful than one-year returns when evaluating a retirement investment. However, the correct choice should also consider your asset allocation, retirement horizon and risk tolerance.
Scheme E
Highest growth potential among the three major NPS asset classes, but also the highest short-term volatility.
Scheme C
Invests primarily in corporate debt and generally sits between equity and government securities in terms of risk and return potential.
Scheme G
Invests in government securities. It generally has lower risk than equity, although its NAV can still fluctuate with interest rates.
How Should You Evaluate an NPS Fund Manager?
Do not select a pension fund manager solely because it has the highest one-year return.
1. Look at 5-Year Returns
Five-year CAGR provides a better view of performance through multiple market conditions than a single-year return.
2. Look at 10-Year Returns
Where a full 10-year track record is available, it provides a longer perspective on consistency across market cycles.
3. Consider Your Asset Allocation
The best-performing pension fund manager in Scheme E may not be appropriate if your retirement portfolio requires a more conservative allocation.
